Frequently Asked Questions

What is loose lay vinyl flooring?

Looselay vinyl flooring benefits from a revolutionary installation method. Its planks or tiles are designed to lay flat and grip the subfloor without the need for adhesives or click-lock mechanisms. What makes it so remarkable is its specially engineered backing that has a high amount of friction, allowing the tiles to firmly grip the subfloor.

As well as providing a cleaner installation process, looselay allows for flexibility and convenience when it comes to replacing or updating the floor. It tends to be typically thicker than other vinyl options, which contributes to its stability and durability. These floors also adapt well to different temperatures and moisture levels. They are ideal for those looking to achieve a stylish and high-quality finish without the complex installation processes.

Do you have to glue down loose lay vinyl plank flooring?

No, you do not need to glue down looselay vinyl floors. The back of each plank is fitted with a special material that allows it to grip the subfloor securely on its own. This particularly benefits those who want a quicker and cleaner installation process. It also allows for easy replacement of individual planks if needed, without leaving any residue or replacing the entire floor.

You can shop our collection of glue down LVT floors if you'd prefer a more secure fit. Or you can use a specialist adhesive for looselay installations, such as the Karndean Tackifier. This creates a sticky film underneath the floor, helping it to achieve a firmer grip on the subfloor.

Is Karndean Looselay any good?

Karndean is a well-respected brand in the flooring industry, and its Looselay collection is highly regarded. What sets Karndean Looselay apart is its blend of practicality, aesthetic appeal, and innovation. The planks are designed to be durable, visually striking, and easy to install. They are also a great choice for high-traffic areas and can safely withstand spills and changes in temperature.

Does loose lay vinyl need underlay?

Loose lay vinyl does not require an underlay. Its backing is engineered to grip the subfloor directly, eliminating the need for both adhesive and underlay. However, it’s essential to ensure that the subfloor is smooth, clean, and free of any debris or imperfections before installation. A well-prepared subfloor is key to the successful installation, as it ensures the planks can firmly grip the surface without any interruptions.

How do you install looselay LVT?

Installing looselay LVT couldn’t be easier. Firstly, the subfloor must be clean, smooth, and dry. This will ensure the floor is secure and stable. Once the subfloor is prepared, you can start laying the planks or tiles directly onto it. As the floor contains a special backing, the planks will simply grip the subfloor tightly.

Place each plank or tile close to the adjacent one, ensuring there are no gaps. In some cases, double-sided tape may be used around the perimeter for extra security, but usually, the friction grip backing is sufficient.

Does looselay vinyl need expansion gap?

Unlike some other flooring types, looselay vinyl does not require an expansion gap to be left between the floor and the walls. This is due to the unique properties of the material, which is not prone to the same level of expansion and contraction as wood, for example.

Its thickness and specially designed backing allow it to stay in place securely, even in varying temperature and moisture conditions. This eliminates the need for an expansion gap, making the installation process even simpler while providing a snug fit for a polished appearance.

Does looselay vinyl move?

Looselay vinyl is designed to stay firmly in place once installed. Its backing grips the subfloor tightly, ensuring that the vinyl does not move or shift under normal conditions. You’ll find that looselay vinyl planks are generally heavier and thicker compared to traditional vinyl, which adds to their stability. However, it is crucial to ensure that the subfloor is properly prepared – it should be clean, dry, and level for the best results.

In spaces with extremely heavy foot traffic or heavy rolling loads, some installers might use double-sided tape around the edges for added security. However, for most residential applications, the friction of the backing is enough to keep the floor securely in place. This steadfast stability, combined with ease of installation and the attractive designs available, makes looselay vinyl an excellent choice for a wide range of settings.
